Barsaat begins with a flashy car on the winding hill roads. In it are two young men on a holiday. Though Pran (Raj Kapoor) would like to get to the city, Gopal (Premnath) wants to spend the night in the hills – he had met a young woman there the previous year.

The songs are too many but they do not irritate or bore. Instead they enhance the enjoyment of the viewer like anything just like the icing on a cake. The story meanders through many turns and reaches its heart-piercing climax impressively, leaving a throbbing in the heart of the viewer with the ending scene. I feel, Raj Kapoor could have avoided the tragic ending of the movie and substituted it with a happy ending.

The film released theatrically on 21st April 1949 and music released on Saregama label. Barsaat (1949) Bollywood Movie Mp3 Songs Download 320Kbps All Audio Track Free.

In many ways Raj Kapoor’s ‘Barsaat’ (1949) heralded the onset of spring for the Indian cinema. To millions of cinema-goers, Barsaat spelled romance. It glamorized special brand of necking and hugging on the screen that came to be known as the caveman style of love-making. It popularized Nargis and Raj Kapoor as a star couple in a sweeping fashion. To catch the aura of romance, Barsaat stressed the equation of pairs to great effect.

The strains of melody were at their sweetest in Barsaat. People simply raved over the songs. Shanker and Jaikishen were able to infuse a musical variation of their own into the widely known forms, mainly through the use of a strong Western orchestra.

But the violin was the heart of the melody in Barsaat. For the first time it was used as the primary instrument underlining the score, thereby breaking the tradition of the piano and the harmonium.

English: Two urban youths Gopal (Prem Nath) and Pran (Raj Kapoor) with contrasting beliefs about love take their annual holiday in Kashmir. Both get attracted to local beauties Neela (Nimmi) and Reshma (Nargis) respectively. While Gopal is a philanderer, Pran is serious about his love for Reshma.

Are they two men, or the externalisation of one man's internal conflict? At one point, driven almost mad by Pran’s grief, Gopal bursts out, ‘ Mera bhi tumhari tarah tadapne ko jee chahta hain.’ (' I want to suffer as you do.' ) Pran concurs – perhaps they are one, after all. Because, ' Kabhi kabhi toh main bhi tumhe dekhkar yahi sochta hoon ki shaayad tum mera hii doosra roop ho.' (' Looking at you, I sometimes feel you are another part of me.) Two men, two ways of loving, or one man, warring with himself? Of course, Gopal can’t be serious for too long. Perhaps they should combine forces and love one girl – that would be the perfect love.

The redemption of a cad through the love of a good woman is not an unknown trope; yet here, when redemption comes, it doesn’t happen overnight. If the madness of Pran’s grief shakes the foundation of Gopal’s cynicism, then the strength of Reshma’s faith teaches him what true love means. The character slowly grows in empathy and there is true repentance, an aching wish to be a better man and the urge to make reparation. The value of 'forever love' is a lesson that’s tragically learnt. Premnath also gets most of the humorous throwaway lines in the film, as befits his character. The relationship between him and Gopal is finely etched – they bicker companionably about their differing philosophies but underneath it all is a deep, abiding affection for each other.

Their played no small part in making the film a blockbuster. Barsaat’s success established Lata Mangeshkar as a voice to reckon with, allowed Raj Kapoor to build RK Studios, gave him his studio’s iconic logo and his 'dream team', and immortalised him and Nargis as a romantic pair. Barsaat is a slow-moving lyrical film. Watch it for the performances – all four leads, and KN Singh cast against type.

Barsaat, 1949 Director: Raj Kapoor Music: Shanker/Jaikishan Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailendra Choreography: Krishna Kumar Playback Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Mohammad Rafi Cast: Nargis, Raj Kapoor, Prem Nath, Nimmi, K.N. Singh, Cuckoo Translation included. The Encyclopedia Of Indian Cinema has this to say about Barsaat: Kapoor’s sombre musical classic contrasts different notions of love. The rich and ‘sensitive’ Pran (Kapoor) passionately loves the poor country girl Reshma (Nargis). Defying her father’s objections, who repudiates her, she runs to Pran but apparently drowns on the way.

The relationship between him and Gopal is finely etched – they bicker companionably about their differing philosophies but underneath it all is a deep, abiding affection for each other. Even when Gopal is deriding Pran as ‘Kavi Maharaj’, still stuck in the 18 th century, and Pran is describing Gopal as ‘ vasana aur hawas ke pujari’, there’s an understanding between them that transcends these labels. ' Mere sabse bade kamzori tum ho – na chhod sakta hoon na rah sakta hoon,' complains Gopal.

The film revolves around two love stories. Pran (Raj Kapoor) and Reshma (Nargis) and Gopal (Prem Nath) and Neela (Nimmi). Two friends with opposite personalities, the rich but sensitive Pran and the womanizing Gopal both have affairs with two mountain girls while holidaying in the valley of Kashmir. While Pran and Reshma's love is true and reciprocated, Gopal is a womanizing villain, who disregards the faithful Neela (Nimmi) and condemns her to wait faithfully for his return with the barsaat (rainy season).

Pran and his philandering friend Gopal (Premnath), who callously jilted the village girl Neela (Nimmi), are driving through the country and happen upon Reshma’s wedding to the obsessive fisherman (Singh) who saved her and believes he owns her. Pran crashes his car, stops the wedding and gets Reshma while the repentant Gopal finds that Neela has killed herself. Kapoor’s 2nd independent production starring himself and Nargis was the R.K. Studio’s first major hit. Its unusually innovative chiaroscuro cinematography (e.g. For Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh’s song Chhod gaye balam) created deep rather than laterally elaborated spaces and relied heavily on metaphor, as in the shot where the angled rope cut off by Reshma’s father aligns with the angle of the violin bow with which Pran nightly serenades Reshma.

In Barsaat, as in Aag, the hero’s image, of a lover-cum-artist is restlessly in search of answers to the big question of his very existence. The question; “What is beauty?” asked in Aag picks up a new theme in Barsaat where the lover asks us all: What is love?” Two friends on a hill-station, Raj Kapoor and Premnath, argue and play out the reply, each with his own convictions about the points raised by the question. ” Raj’s love for a girl of the hills played by Nargis eventually proves that love is immortal and divine and supersedes that of his friend, who fails to prove his own contention that love is but material and transitory. The latter’s romance with another rustic girl played by Nimmi, which he treats as a touch and go affair assumes a tragic form in its fatal end, teaching him a lesson for life. Of course all this high-flown metaphysical aspects of the story does not constitute the whole of Barsaat. The spirit of Barsaat lived in its songs and the ingenuity with which Raj was able to mould the popular appeal of his image as the super-lover for the audiences of the ‘fifties.’ Two streams of influences crossed and mixed with each other in the figure of the screen lover.

Raj, in the role, combined the identification, both with the tragic lover of ‘Devdas’ and the divine romantic figure of Shree Krishna at the same time. In the most electrifying sequence of the film, Raj standing on a mount, violin in hand, begins to play the famous opening strains of the song “O, o, mujhe kisi se pyar ho gaya.” And then Nargis, maddened by the call of his violin, comes tearing through woods and streams in the dark night to finally fall inert and helpless into his arms. The violin replaced the flute in this clever transferring of the ancient Radha-Krishna myth to modern romantic fantasy. And as Devdas, the lover was forever wrecked by feelings of agony and pain for his beloved. He was distant even when she was closest to him and both were in the throes of great suffering when separated from each other.
